Mr. Grumpy-Pants is the seventh episode of Season 1. It is the eighth episode of Superjail overall. Out of all the episodes of Season 1, this episode is the only one with emotional moments that happen between the dying child Cancer and a Superjail inmate, Ash. Many hail this as a very sad episode, as the inmates are trying to make her final days happier and Cancer dying at the end.

Plot[]

Jacknife's latest crime has him stealing prescription drugs from a children's cancer ward at a children's hospital on Christmas. A girl crawls into his sack, and is taken with him as he is taken to Superjail by Jailbot. The Warden, whose birthday was on this day, finds her and orders Jailbot to burn her. She is saved by Ash. After seeing her again, The Warden gives birth to his Inner-child Demon, leaving him brain dead. The Demon tries many times to kill the little girl, called Cancer, which the inmates pronoun as "Sanser", but he fails. He returns to The Warden, and goes back inside him. The Warden bursts into Cancer's birthday party and his Demon comes out of his body. Meanwhile, Jared wanted to get a special present for The Warden to cheer him up and obtains Chinese ancient mystery butter, which purportedly removed wrinkles (reverses aging), from a shop in a Chinatown. Since the birthday cake "icing" was made with the Chinese ancient mystery butter, all the inmates turned into babies/infants. And thus, in a normal Superjail! fashion, everybody starts killing each other. The Warden's Inner Demon throws tons of forks at Cancer, but an inmate takes them and dies. But the presents fall on her, killing her (or she succumbs to her disease). Ash in horror, sees this and runs over to Cancer in an attempt to help her, but she's dead. He shouts that everyone should stop, while carrying a dead Cancer. Everyone returns to their adult size, and they mourn over her death.

Trivia[]

  • This is the very first episode in the series where The Twins don't appear. However, Richard Mather, the voice actor of The Twins, is still credited in this episode’s credits. This could most likely be due to Richard Mather voicing a few of the Superjail inmates in this episode, such as the pale "Pie Guy" inmate who asks Ash to read him a story.
  • When all of the terminally-ill children at the hospital cry, the infamous crying sound effect known as Sound Ideas, Human, Baby crying can be heard. This sound effect is heard again in "Jean, Paul, Beefy and Alice."
  • We find out that The Warden's birthday is on December 25th, which is actually Christmas Day.
  • The Warden has the head of a warthog on the top of his fireplace in his library.
  • When Jailbot carries Cancer in the air, he passes by the famous Mt. Rushmore monument, but with the carved faces of The Warden, Jared, Alice and Jailbot into it.
  • This episode marks the second appearance of Superjail's furnace/boiler room, which previously appeared on one of The Twin’s monitors in "Cold-Blooded."
  • This episode marks the first appearance of Ash in the series, which is his only appearance in Season 1. However, he was unnamed at the time of this episode's release. His name would later be officially revealed on a Adult Swim bump.
  • Inside Ash's prison cell, you can see the body of a burnt-up inmate.
  • This episode reveals that Superjail has its own Chinatown, which is located somewhere the inmate prison cells, as implied when The Warden's Inner Child grabs a long sword out of a Chinatown store (which was the same store that Jared visited to obtain the Chinese ancient mystery butter) from an air vent, which leads to Ash's prison cell.
  • When all of the inmates say "Aww!" to Cancer, Gary opens his mouth and says the same word, despite him not even having the ability to speak at all.
  • Jean and Paul, the Gay Couple/Gay Inmates, make a cameo appearance at Cancer’s birthday party.
  • The banner at Cancer's birthday party says "Happy Birthday Wander", but the name of Wander is actually crossed off by Cancer's name.
  • The memorial image of Cancer that appears at the end of this episode shows that she is wearing a Bunny T-shirt. In the series' pilot episode "Bunny Love", there was a little girl resembling Cancer who appeared in the episode's opening intro that wore the same Bunny T-shirt, implying that she and Cancer are the same characters. However, the headband that the little girl wore is missing, which is instead replaced by a butterfly hair clip. The text below the memorial image reveals that she was born in the year of 2004 and would later die in 2008.

Cultural References[]

  • One of the Outer Worlds in the episode's intro shows a bunch of small green-colored people that resemble The Smurfs, with a few being burned alive by a magnify glass from an orange-haired girl.
  • The Warden's Inner Child was inspired by the baby from the 1974 horror film It's Alive.
  • The song that Ash sings at the end of the episode is a parody of Eternal Flame by The Bangles, which also plays during the credits of this episode instead of the usual credits theme.
