Combaticus is the second episode of Season 1. It is the third episode of Superjail overall.

Plot[]

The episode begins off with Jacknife grave stealing. He digs up a third coffin to find a recently deceased woman. As Jacknife was getting ready to have his way with the corpse Jailbot flies out and grabs him by the crotch and then takes him away, then starts the intro.

After that the convicts are seen outside all being bored, then in the next scene The Warden, Jared, Alice, and Jailbot are underground looking around, having fun (well, other than Jared who is afraid of caves). Jailbot chases a scorpion (Gore- the Pummelonian god of war.) while the rest discover the ancient city of Pummelonia. Jared then reads that it's an ancient city that world host fights. From there The Warden gets the idea to deal with the boredom that The Doctor described as a "depression" with the grand opening of "Fight City." The Twins then are seen at their Control Room as they both give their green blood to the creation of something.

Meanwhile, the grand opening begins with the promise that the one who wins is set free. The fighting begins with two convicts and then after one died then more were put in the ring. Meanwhile, The Twins have now made Combaticus which is then in the next scene introduced to Fight City. He kills tons of convicts, and that was ruining The Warden's plans so he calls the Doctor and had Specimen 7 released. It begins to fight, and while that was happening Jailbot finally caught up with the scorpion which turned into the war god Gore. However, Jailbot killed him. After that the whole Fight City dome starts falling in which ended the fight between Combaticus and Specimen 7. Specimen 7 rescues The Warden while Combaticus saves The Twins. At the end of the episode The Twins throw the ashes of Combaticus and he shows up in the stars declaring he is the new god of war.

Trivia[]

  • This is the very first episode in the series to feature the voice acting roles of Sally Donovan and Reggie Watts.
  • The graveyard shown at the beginning of this episode is called the "Eternal Slumber Cemetery", which appears on a sign.
  • Despite being taken to Superjail at the beginning of the episode, this is the first episode where Jacknife isn’t actually seen anywhere in the jail or escaping at the end of the episode.
  • The music that plays when Jailbot is chasing the scorpion is labeled as "Tribal music", according to Adult Swim.com’s closed captions.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of the recurring Bored Inmate duo.
  • Despite being killed by Inmate #34LXUWR, Fatty can still be seen cheering in the crowd of inmates. This could most likely be due to the cheering animation for the inmates being reused for this scene.
  • The Twins have a doorway in their computer room. Although this was probably included for the ease of having Jailbot escape rather than having him crash through yet another wall.
  • The Twin's tandem bike from "Bunny Love" appears in the final scene of this episode. It is shown sitting on the grass in the corner.
  • On Adult Swim.com and the Season 1 DVD release of Superjail, in the captions of this episode, the city of Pummelonia is misspelled as "Pamelonia." The correct spelling of Pummelonia has been used on Adult Swim's site (unlike Adult Swim.com) and other sources related to this episode.

Cultural References[]

  • The Doctor is shown torturing an inmate by forcing him to view various imagery. This is reminiscent of the film A Clockwork Orange, which itself is based off a novel with the same name.
  • One of the worlds that Jailbot chases the scorpion through in the jail shows small green humanoid people holding an inmate captive. These small green people heavily resemble The Smurfs. The way that these people are holding the inmate captive is a reference to the novel Gulliver’s Travels.
  • The pod that Combaticus emerges from resembles the transport "telepods" from the 1986 film The Fly.
  • Combaticus’ commercial shows him shattering someone’s skull with a pinch. This is a reference to the infamous scene from the film Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. Coincidentally, the film's setting takes place in a very violent prison, similar to the setting of Superjail.
  • The music that plays when Combaticus comes out is "Stone Cold" by Steve Austin of WWE.
  • Specimen 7’s theme references the music "Tubular Bells", which is notable for its usage in the film The Exorcist.
  • This episode's ending music sounds similar to the song "Shenhua'' from the video game Shenmue.
